they would like to see in a new pope. today they took time to worship. >> a mass about three miles from the vatican, one of dozens of cardinals is celebrating mass throughout rome. catholics filled the pews, knowing they may be watching watching the next pope. the cardinals search for a new leader on tuesday. final preparations are under way at the sistine chapel. jamming systems are in effect. the process is far from high tech. workers set up the chimney and stove that will burn white smoke alouting the world that there is a new pope. >> no conclave has lasted more than five days, but this time there's no clear front runner, and that has many catholics speculating about how long this process will take. >> i think it's going to take a while, about two or three days. >> about six days. >> it's going to take a while

to get timothy dolan to get elected. >> an american is not what those in rome have in mind. >> we're voting for an italian. 115 cardinals will vote. the one who receives two-thirds will be the next pope. >> reporter: one vatican writer says there's been so much uncertainly facing a conclave and never before have therein so many possible candidates. reporting live in vatican city, i'm randall pinkston, back to you and phil. >> a lot of secrecy there as of about a week or two ago, american cardinals were holding daily briefings, but that's stopped. is there a reason why that's stopped? are they planning on keeping the process behind closed doors completely? >> well, they all have to take a vow of secrecy. the news conferences being held by the american cardinals were

different because no other cardinals from anywhere in the world were having briefings. one is they wanted to clamp down on outside talk. that's theory number one. the cardinals thought the americans were getting too much international publicity. we heard that's one of the reasons. whatever the case the news conferences stopped, and the cardinals continued to speak publicly, but not in a formal setting. >> thanks, randall, for joining us live from vatican city. tickets are going fast for seats at the new 49er stadium set to open in the fall. >> corporations and fans have spent $403 million on tickets, the most expensive seats are already gone, like the luxury boxes and club seats at midfield. average ticket prices are

double those at candlestick. >> it's really just educating the people between candlestick and the new building, benefits, amenities, transportation, access, the amount of events the building can host. we're bidding bidding on super bowls in the future. >> a lot of those are return customers and for those without big bucks, you can spread out seat licenses over years. major milestone yesterday, concrete trucks went to work carrying concrete that was poured on to the section of three football fields. it took careful plans. cal tran moved the first westbound lane slightly to the south, allowing the construction of that eastbound span. >> with that westbound traffic out of the way, they could then demolish the lanes and finish

the eastbound deck. we're happy to open it to the public. >> the westbound span up to half a year before the eastbound lanes. the $6.4 billion project is expected to be completed in september. we're counting the days until the grand opening of the new eastern span. in other bay area headlines, a recall election begins tomorrow in half moon bay. it stems over a fight about who should run the city's fire stations. backers of recall want to throw out three board members of the coastside fire protection district. those board members voted to end the contract are cal fire in favor of locals running the operation. critics say local control has not worked out before. recall balloting continues through april 2nd.

on wednesday, san ramon residents get to see -- along 80. it's for buses and carpools headed to business centers around the area. the $102 million project is aimed at easing traffic congestion this that area. >> and new this morning, the fresno county animal sanctuary where a volunteer was mauled to death by a lion will reopen for the first time since the attack. there's also a moment of silence. on wednesday, a 24-year-old diana hanson was attacked by a 450-pound lion named course course. he was shot and called by deputies. >> crews from san diego were called out after a racing sailboat broke apart until the

surf near san which he penaltity island. after making it to sure, the six were hoisted onto a coast guard helicopter and taken to the hospital where one man was pronounced dead. a coast guard spokesperson says one of the survivors kept the situation from getting worse. >> he got all the survivors underneath a raft, kept them out of the wind. they were pretty cold by the time they got to the beach. >> the crew initially declined declined -- from the coast guard and have requested a simple tow boat, but 8-foot swells and high winds made rescuing them that way impossible. chuck hagel believes american officials can work things out with afghan leaders. >> he met with u.s. troops today. he was responding to an order by hamid karzai that u.s.

special forces leave the province just outside of kabul because of allegations that they were involved in torture. voting begins today in the falkland islands off the coast of argentina. voters are asked if they want to remain british seas territories. it's a rare chance for their voices to be heard. they were at the center of a war between argentina and england. another comet is whizzing by arrieta. it's calls pan-starrs. the best time to look for it, about 15 minutes after twilight. and today on face the nation, the push for background checks on gun sales. face the nation starts at 8:30

the 30s. we'll head over toward mt. diablo. that would be beautiful today. the visibilities out there should be terrific. sunny and chilly to start with. temperatures in the 30s and 40s this morning. we'll warm it up up to about the 50s. 37 in santa rosa and san jose, 32-degree, livermore, 38. we've got a nice day on tap for the bay area. today we get highs in the 60s. but the high will migrate closer to the shoreline. as it does, we'll warm well into the 70s this week. the numbers won't set record highs but it will be plenty warm. and the futurecast for today shows a few little watches of clouds stuck to the peninsula. aside are the that, as time marchs on, the clouds melt and we look at a sunny day today. a few clouds drift in later in the day for monday, but for monday, sunday lives up to its

condition got 100 condition each. people with assault rifles got 200 bucks. a spokesperson say they will make sure the collected weapons will not get back on the streets. >> as soon as we receive the weapons, we make sure they're not stolen. if they're not stolen, we take them back. if we can, we're going to destroy them right here on scene. we have armors here that will disable the weapons and they will never be used again. >> 10 yesterday morning but the vallejo chief tells us people started showing up as early as 7. concerns about gun shows also in the news right now. the event happens 7 times a year. mark lemo wants to make it easier for officials to stop the gun shows from happening. the new bill would require approval from san francisco and san mateo before it could go

on. >> joining us live is state senator mark leno. >> good morning. >> good morning. what is the point of this bill? >> for years now the top priority for the neighborhood surrounding the area is to get the gun show out of cow palace. we've tried to ban them. senator spear a few years ago -- actually nine years ago introduced the first bill. i got a bill to schwarzenegger's desk. he vetoed it. we're not trying to ban anything now. as repeated, keep the decision making closer to those who will be impacted by the decision made. >> let's be honest here. you're out to ban gun shows at the cow palace. you're just saying rather than the state doing it, we want to give the locals the power to do it, but the ultimate goal is to ban gun shows. my question is why? >> the bill will require that the board of supervisors of each county, even though the land is own by the state,

approve a resolution saying we support a gun show. i can't tell you who's going to be elected 30, 50 years from now. if there was a change of heart and they wanted it -- >> let's cut to the chase. the point is you don't want gun shows at the cow palace. i want to know why. 18,000 people show up. most of them or all of them appear to be law abiding. they're following the gun control laws of the state of california. why do you want them banned? or is this just a political statement? >> i asked the question to your audience, raise your hand if you would like a gun show across the street from your home? raise your hand if you would like a gun show across the street from your child's school. the neighborhood does not want it. why are we not listening to what the neighborhood wants in why are we, the state, imposing it on a community that does not have that inits community values? that's the point. >> okay. but the critics of your proposal say san francisco is a place where you declare days in honor of porn stars, you hand out needles to drug addicts on

demand. what's the logic is this. >> this is not me. i'm representing my constituents who don't want the gun shows. we're talking about neighborhoods who live in virtual war zones. the highest rate of gun murders are in these neighborhoods. they don't want the glamourization, commercialization of guns right in their front yard, and that's what's going on. >> on. >> okay. if the cow palace is controlled by the state, why don't we move to have the state ban gun shows from its facilities. >> we tried that. arnold schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would do just that. this is a reasonable approach. it's about local control. it's just about local control. again, governor brown's whole theme, let the decision making be closer to the people who will be affected by this vision. >> this is interesting to note. this is something else you were involved in. while we talk about guns and

wanting to ban them. the state had a program for picking up the guns that are being illegally held by felons, sex offenders, and mentally disturbed people. yet the governor stripped tens of millions of dollars out of that fund in order to balance their budget. and thanks to you, we got the money back, but what does it say to the arguments of people who say why don't we enforce the laws that we have now rather than putting these new restrictions on it? >> well, what we're doing to the gun show at the cow palace has nothing to do with restricting ownership, but you're talking about the fact that there are about 40,000 weapons, including 1600 assault weapons in the hands of people who can legally not possess them. >> right. >> so it's the job of the department of justice and the attorney general to confiscate those weapons. >> but they stripped them of the funds na that program. >> we had to cut everything out of general fund spending a few

years back. there's a pot of money with that million dollars of surplus in that that the attorney general can use to -- >> but you guys took the money and used it elsewhere and then after newtown came back and said, we made a mistake. we have to give the money back. >> no. no. we borrowed some money from the account. there's still a $25 million surplus. we're just going to use 24 of that right now to give to the attorney general to confiscate weapons you don't want people to have who are felons. >> right, but doing it a year or two ago rather than stripping the funds for it. >> she's been doing it on an ongoing basis. we want money that's just sitting there unused. >> well, i'm glad you did it and got the money back, but i still think if you enforce the laws you have. >> i'm not going to interfere with you. >> rather than asking for new ones. anyway, thanks for stopping by

welcome back. the time is now 7:54. that's 7:54, but i hope you changed your clocks last nite. out reach coordinators are working with homeless people in the south bay after authorities shut down a massive tent city. san jose police cleared out the etch campment near spring street on friday and warning went out to about hundred homeless people camping there. the cleanup costs are estimated between 20-$30,000 for this cleanup operation. the authorities say that there are about 60 homeless camps in santa clara county. this one struck out because of its location near san jose international airport. >> that meant travelers could spot it from above. i talked with one of the residents of that tent city who was being kicked out. he had been living there for a couple of months. so my first question is how did you end up here? house foreclosure, bank problems, economics, crazy ex. >> the misconception for a lot

of people is that people choose to be homeless. >> no. this kind of happens to you. i'm educated. we had moms and dads here christmas morning. this is what happens. >> the city said it's made shelters available to everyone in this encampment. >> they still have a shortcoming of two-thirds. there's one gentleman out here that says 1,000 shelter beds, 6,000 homeless people. that's not far off. >> the cause sometimes is often alcoholism, mental illness. >> you have a small disaster. this one is economic, and then you end up with people walking around looking like refugees inside the borders of the united states. >> and a lot of them did go to emergency shelter beds, but they're saying a lot of the problems with that is there's bed bugs. you have to enter a lottery to

known by police for drug activity. in headlines around the bay, construction milestone at the bay bridge. concrete was poured onto the final deck section that covered three football fields. it's going to be completed in september. san jose's minimum wage increase is going to take effect tomorrow. that will make the minimum wage 10 bucks an hour. voters approved that in november by 59%. the initiative was introduced by state students and a broad coalition of labor groups. now they're working with the business community to bring more shoppers and diners to san jose, hoping more business will make up for the extra cost. thousand for national news. let's take a look at what's left of homes being torn down in massachusetts after the

latest east coast storm. the beaches on plum island have been a zone of destruction where homes were smashed to pieces by pounding surf. they've been littering the beach beach. state senator says more should have been done to protect the properties. >> when you see homes falling falling into the ocean, clearly you feel not enough was done. this is not a situation where we've done nothing. it's a situation where the totality of everything we've done was not enough to protect the homes against the storm. >> it had dunes and a large amount of sand but the storms have taken their toll. chuck hagel is meeting with hamid karzai today. he says he believes american officials can work things out with afghan leaders over the presence of u.s. commandos.

karzai ordered them out of the province because of allegations that afghans working with the u.s. teams were involved in torture. for you white house watchers, some say president obama is poised to select thomas perez as the next secretary of labor. he's the head of the justice department labor division. the former labor secretary resigned in january. the white house is not saying anything official and is declining to comment on the matter so far. >> you can find first lady michelle obama on twitter tomorrow. she's going to be answering questions on her let's move initiative. it's celebrating the 3rd 3rd anniversary this year. it's hoping to solve the issue of childhood obesity. looking and feeling like a princess for prom night, how bay area girls are getting a chance to do just that without their parents breaking the bank. that's what we're looking for, any edge we can get.

"the princess project" collects dresses welcome back. 8:11. every high school girl wants to feel like a princess. the princess project collects new prom dress and accessories and distributes them to girl who is can't i -- afford to buy them. it's given a boost of self- esteem to thousands of girls. >> they're happy and they end up wanting to give back, which is really great. they redonate dresses and kind of just paying it forward. >> since the princess project began in 2002, it's given away more than 20,000 dresses this

entire team to create. rebecca jarvis introduces us to the google doodlers. >> they're young, they're smart, and they have an awful lot of fun doing their job. this group of 13 mostly 20- somethingest artists and engineers are known as google doodlers. >> what does it mean to be a doodler who works at google? >> it means i have the unique opportunity to change the logo on the home page with an illustration. >> for the last four years artist jennifer hamm has been part of the team that makes those renditions on the google home page. >> we don't want to hinder our audience from actually searching because they came to our home page to search, but we also want to do something fun. >> recently the doodlers have

little leaguers kicked it off this weekend with a parade. esidio and little league baseball season is here. they kicked things off this weekend with a parade. they marched in and made their way through the marina districts and the famous giants mascot, lucille, apparently made an appearance, more than 120 team will be playing this year. that's a record. san francisco may be feeling a little smug about itself these days from its world series champion giants giants.
